Headquarters, Jennette’s Division
10 June 2008
General Circular No.2}
By order of General J. Jennette this General Circular is herewith issued. Please ensure the widest dissemination of the information contained herein.
1. The Division will be organized into the following Brigades:
--1st Brigade: Colonel Perry, Commanding [1st/7th and 9th Regiments]
--2nd Brigade: Colonel Abraham, Commanding [5th, 6th 8th and 10th Regiments]
--3rd Brigade: Colonel Fallin, Commanding [3rd Regiment]
--4th Brigade: Colonel Potts, Commanding [2nd and 4th Regiments}
2. Your attention is directed to the below communiqué received from Colonel Greg L. Gallion, Chief-of-Staff, Longstreet's Corps on/about 3 June 2008. Please ensure the widest dissemination and understanding of the spirit and intend of this communiqué within your organization. Ignorance of the content will not be a defense for the consequences spelled out below.
Officers,
By order of
General Cornett, General Order Number 2 is herewith
transmitted. Please read the following and see that it is sent to, and
understood by, all under your respective commands.
General Order Number 2: June 3, 2008
Article 1: Any soldiers involved in fisticuffs, whether on or off the
field of battle, or in the camps, regardless of who is at fault, will be
ejected from the event.
Article 2: Any individual caught in the cornfield boundary behind the
cavalry camps, will be arrested by civil authorities, and charged with
trespassing. This area is a cash crop field, and no one has any
business being there. This is also a directive from the GAC Staff.
Article 3: Any unit or command that "breaks" a scenario, will sit out a
subsequent scenario, at the discretion of the commanding General. There
has been a great deal of work put into these scenarios, to add to the
enjoyment of the reenactors, and for the educational benefit of the
viewing public. Our goal is to replicate as much as we can, what
actually happened in July 1863, for the education of the public. Those
who cannot abide by these scenario requirements, should determine to
stay home, instead of attending the event.
Article 4: All officers and enlisted men, should upon the discharge of
their duties, be properly attired and accoutred for the posts with which
they are charged. For all dealings with Headquarters, all who come into
such environs, shall not only perform in such a manner as above
described, but shall take care to render all appropriate military
decorum, etiquette, and deportment, as is proper for the occasion, each
time such service is rendered.
On behalf of General Cornett, I have the honor to be,
Respectfully,
Your Obedient Servant,
Colonel Greg L. Gallion
Chief-of-Staff, Longstreet's Corps
3. On 6 June 2008 Colonel Greg Gallion, Chief-of-Staff, Longstreet's Corps transmitted the following communiqué:
Officers Under the Command of General Cornett,
Gentlemen, greetings on behalf of General Cornett.
The General wishes me to compliment each of you, on your preparations, so far, in getting your command elements ready for the Gettysburg Campaign.
I am further tasked with requesting from each of you, an After-Action Report, within one month (by Friday, August 8) to be directed to this office. Such reports are as historically varied, as they are numerous, so your may ultimately vary from another officer's, in style and length.
The important element to be adhered to, is that you secure from all your subalterns, i.e. your Brigade, Battalion, and Company Commanders, in turn, a complete and accurate narrative, of what has transpired during this campaign. These reports should be received and compiled by you, read for detail, and disseminated to me, for transmission to General Cornett.
Have your subalterns, on each level, include matters of logistics, armaments and accoutrements, morale and esprit, conditions and environs of camps, and all tactical details to support all engagements in which said command participated, including losses in combat (both in the form of "hits" and real-life injuries sustained) during scenarios.
All of the above will have been submitted to you, from a microscopic part of the whole, concerning themselves with their own sectors, dealing with tactical concerns. Your own reports should encompass more the strategic aspects, as you saw them, in the discharge of your command duties.
For General(s) Shelton, McCann and Sheppard, these reports are required, as a matter of routine for Longstreet's Corps. All other Division and Branch commanders are encouraged, though not actually required to participate. Nonetheless, we hope to get 100% participation, as feedback for future events.
I might suggest that you spend some reading time, for you and your subalterns, in the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion, in whose volumes you will find myriad examples of such reports.
Please let me know if I may in any way assist you in this endeavor.
1St Division, Army of Northern Virginia implementation of the above communiqué:
Although the above was written primarily for members of Longstreet’s, the Division, in keeping with our tradition, will participate in this undertaking. More will follow on this at the event.
4. On 8 June 2008 Major Tim Fogarty, Quartermaster, Longstreet's Corps transmitted the following communiqué to Major Hillary Ferguson, Quartermaster, 1St Division, Army of Northern Virginia:
Greetings Fellow Quartermasters,
Upon returning from the walkthrough/meeting at Gettysburg on May 31, I’m passing along information I feel is pertinent to we QM’s.
1) On arriving at registration, all reenactors will receive an information packet, to which the information I’m passing to you is included. Hopefully if everyone reads this it will make our jobs bit easier.
2) Trash-A trash bag will be given to each registered reenactor. Trash is to be placed beside the nearest wood pile nearest to your camp and will be collected on a daily basis.
3) Please no hoarding/stockpiling of firewood, it is July, other than to cook or an evening fire there will be more than enough to go around. At camps close on Sunday, please return wood to the nearest pile or stack neatly in camp streets.
4) All firepits must be filled in and all tent stakes pulled. This is a working farm, an injured animal or blown tire is time and money to the Reddings and Entwhistles plus we are respecting their property.
5) Please gather or burn all hay/straw. Large amounts are hard to cleanup and wasteful.
6) Ice-A 20lb bag will be sold for $4.00. In trying to keep camps more period, ice will be staged in 2 or 3 areas around the camp. Ice will be brought into the camps by gators as weather/heat conditions warrant.
7) All division commanders’ tents will be marked with a gold triangular flag flying above it.
8) Security/EMT’s will be on duty 24 hours. An emergency contact number to relay messages is 717 334-6111 (see information under EMERGENCY CONTACT NUMBER).
9) An AAR is requested to this Quartermaster to supply information as to how the event went and help supply info for future large events….”
1St Division, Army of Northern Virginia implementation of the above communiqué:
Firepits: The policy of the Division for this event will be not to dig any firepits. The primary purpose for this policy is not to open the ground to the possibility of erosion. In addition this adherence to this policy will ensure no glass or any other trash is buried in the fire pits.
Hay/straw: At the conclusion of the encampment hay/straw will not be burned by anyone in the Division – all hay/straw will be, by regiment, put into one central area at the foot of the company streets.
After Action Reports (AAR): Brigade and/or Regimental/BTN Quartermasters will be asked to assist the Division Quartermaster in the preparation of an AAR by providing information about the event and assessments.
5. Combined Provost, Ordnance and Sargeant Majors Meetings: There will be a combined provost, Ordnance and Sargeant Majors. meeting at the Divisional provost HQ on Thursday evening. Additional meetings will be held on Friday and Saturday. Every effort will be made to hold the Friday and Saturday meetings in the late afternoon to allow maximum participation by all in the evening scheduled events.
6. Emergency Contact Number: Please print a copy of this information, or write it down to put with your Gettysburg-related material. Should anyone have an emergency, in the camp and/or battlefields, the emergency contact number at the Command Center will be (717) 334-6111. The emergency center will be staffed round the clock, for any medical emergency, civil assistance which may be required, or to contact someone who is needed by a family member, back home for emergency purposes. Please ensure the windiest disseminate of this information to all personnel, on all levels. This number is not to be used for any trivial matter-emergencies only. It is a true equivalent of a 911 response number, and is not to be treated otherwise.
7. Very Important Reenactor Information from the event Website
The following information was extracted from the event website on 9 June 2008. You are encouraged to visit the website prior to your travel to obtain any updates that may be posted. Also please note Division amendments to some of the policy/guidelines/rules.
ARRIVAL DATE:
Reenactors may begin to arrive no earlier than noon on Wednesday, July 2nd. All reenactors must first check in at the registration barn upon arrival at the event site.
For the 1st Division, ANV this is amended as follows: Brigade and Regimental/BTN camp areas will not be available for assignment to the respective staff members until 1200 on Wednesday, 2 July. Should personnel arrive at the site before the camp areas are ready for assignment by the Divisional Quartermaster, they will be asked to wait. We would ask you understanding and cooperation in this matter. Your Divisional staff cannot and will not arrive at the site until early that day and need time to lay out the camp outlines for you.
SITE REGISTRATION HOURS:
--Wednesday, July 2nd - Noon - 10.00 p.m.
--Thursday,
July 3rd - 7:00 a.m. through - 8:00 p.m. Saturday, July 5th.
--Sunday, July 6th - 6:00 a.m. - Noon.
*NOTE! Although reenactors will be able to check in at registration site after dark, they will not be allowed take vehicles into the camps between 11PM – 6AM due to safety and logistical considerations. Night arrivals will be staged at registration or in their appropriate parking lot from after dark until dawn.
PASS REQUIRED:
You must have valid ID to register. After registering each reenactor is required to present their pass upon entering the Reenactor parking and camps. You must have your pass at all times. Each person in a vehicle must have a pass or they will not be allowed entry. If you do not have your pass, or have forgotten or misplaced your pass, it will be necessary to return to registration for a replacement. CSA reenactors may be required to show their pass when re-entering the CSA camp on foot from the CSA parking area. Please be considerate and respectful of gate personnel. They have a very difficult job so your cooperation, a smile and thank you is always appreciated!
ATTIRE:
All reenactors including, military, military dependents (civilian) and living history must be in period attire at all times during event public hours.
For the 1st Division, ANV this is amended as follows: All reenactors as defined above must be in period attire during all hours of the event. Exceptions may be authorized by individual Regimental, Brigade and Division commanders and/or medical staff for health and safety considerations/reasons. Please keep in mind that this event is not only for the public but for us!
EMERGENCY SERVICES:
There will be professionally staffed Emergency Services on site as a 24-hour operation. This will include EMS (paramedic & EMT's) and a Pennsylvania Forest Fire Crew. EMS aid stations will be established in the CSA Camp as well as a 24/7 field hospital serving the Federal, Sutler & Living History areas in the rear end of the long equipment shed near Activities Tent #1. During visitor hours additional EMS and fire crews will be staged to respond for spectators and military personnel in coordination with the battle scenarios.
REENACTOR SHUTTLE:
For your convenience there will be an on-site shuttle exclusively for registered reenactors. The shuttle will generally run Thursday & Friday 7:00AM – 11PM, Saturday 7:00AM until after the Camp Dance(s) and Sunday 7:00AM until after the afternoon battle. Times may change due to demand, battlefield and scenario logistics. The CSA shuttle will go from the CSA Camp and up Redding Farm Lane to a terminal point at the south end of the Sutler area near Activities Tent #1 on the Redding Farm and the Federal Shuttle will go from the U.S. Camps to a terminal point at the north (Federal) end of the Sutler area. Be aware that the shuttle will only be for reenactors pick up and drop at designated and controlled areas. Please understand there will be no “pick-ups” along the way other than designated areas due to safety and logistical considerations. Please respect shuttle drivers and attendants as they are serving for your benefit and comfort.
CARS IN CAMP:
One persistent and legitimate reenactor complaint is: that cars in camp during the event significantly detracts from everyone’s experience. The solution is to simply be considerate, get unloaded and remove your vehicle immediately after unloading - even if it is open vehicle hours. The "camps closed to vehicle" regulations will be strictly enforced by organizers and military command. No vehicles will be allowed in the camps after 11AM Friday until the conclusion of Sunday’s battle unless emergency permission is obtained from U.S. or C.S. command. Military provosts will assist in enforcing this regulation. Be advised that violating vehicles will be towed and impounded near the command center by event security and will then be released upon payment of $100 towing fee to cover cost of removal. The vast majority of reenactors request and fully support this policy.
For the 1st Division, ANV this is amended as follows: The Brigade and Regimental Commanders and their respective staffs are responsible for ensuring procedures are implemented for the orderly removal of cars from the camps as soon as possible after unloading. The key here is respect for others and courtesy to others. There will only be a very limited space around the edges of the camp to allow for vehicle movement. Space within the company street areas will be such that cars will not fit.
TRASH BAGS:
Every registered reenactor will be provided with two trash bags at registration. Please respect the property owners who graciously allow us access to their beautiful farms. Reenactment sites are precious and we all want to be invited to return. If you place full bags in the area of the camp firewood piles they will be collected daily. For those camping in wooded areas total cleanup is especially critical prior to breaking camp.
FIREPITS & TENT STAKES:
These are working farms with hard working owners that are proud of their land. Farm equipment must travel on these fields and one of the landowners has and rides horses. For the sake of courtesy and safety please carefully restore and repair any soil disturbance. Tent stakes left in the ground have punctured tires of farm equipment. Please double check for stakes.
For the 1st Division, ANV this is amended as follows: During this event units/members will not dig firepits.
HORSE HAY:
During Cavalry Registration hay chits will be issued at the rate of 1 chit per horse each day at the event (that is one bale per day per horse). Each chit equals one bale. Example: One horse for Friday, Saturday & Sunday = 3 chits and 3 bales of hay. For you and your horse’s convenience we strongly urge the registrant to exchange chits for all your allotted hay when registering at cavalry registration. For those with numerous horses a hay wagon will be staged in a designated area in each respective cavalry area once per day to distribute hay in return for chits. This seems to be a very fair and practical system. Horse hay has become a very expensive and difficult commodity. You must present a chit to receive hay! Absolutely no horses admitted on site without current Coggins certification. Please gather loose hay and straw and police your area before breaking camp. Massive amounts of loose, wet, soiled hay is wasteful and difficult to clean up especially in wooded areas.
ICE:
After serious consideration we have decided to provide a 20 lb. bag of ice for $4. We feel it prudent and informational to explain our reasoning as well as reenactment ice dynamics. Most events charge $3 for a small 8 lb. bag. The cost of providing ice at an event in the middle of farm fields is costly, but essential. Aside from the obvious cost of the product, there is transportation cost to site, a cost of renting freezer reefer trailers for the duration of event, a cost of hundreds of gallons of diesel to run the reefers and a cost of vehicles and staff to distribute the ice. We recently observed a local Super Wal-Mart selling 20 lb. bags for $3.39 without having to incur most of these expenses. Fuel and transportation cost are extremely impacting. It is more effective for us to purchase twenty pound bags and pass those savings on to you, thus, it is our conclusion that a twenty pound bag of ice for $4 is simply a better deal for reenactors rather than an eight pound bag of ice. Consider splitting a bag with a comrade to get a great value. Ice will be available near the CSA Camp on the parking lot side of the walking path. On the Federal/Sutler/LH side ice will be located at the Snack & Beverage Station at the haybarn overhang near Activities Tent #1. Between 8 – 9AM each morning ice will be staged for purchase in the CSA Camp at the water tanker in the upper field and for the Federal Camp at the point of woods near Federal HQ. Ice will also be brought to those locations, or into the camps, after each battle as conditions warrant.
SHOWERS:
The Gettysburg YWCA has graciously agreed to make shower facilities available for your convenience at the YWCA Recreation facility for a minimal usage charge (approximately $3 per person) payable at the YWCA. The YWCA is located at The Lutheran Seminary on Rt. 116 W (Fairfield Road) at the west edge of Gettysburg. Shower hours will be: Thursday, July 3rd 6 AM – 10 PM, Friday, July 4th, 8AM – 12 Noon & 7 PM – 10 PM, Saturday, July 5th, 8AM – 9 PM and Sunday, July 6th, 12PM – 6PM.
CAMP DANCES:
There will be two Camp Dances on Saturday evening in Tent #1 & Tent #2 at 8:00PM for your enjoyment. The camp shuttles will continue running to these areas until 1 hour after the dances are over or until everyone is transported back to camp. Food and beverages will be available before and during the dances at the Hay Barn overhang near Activity #1 and the Food/Beverage Tent near Activity#2.
RELIGIOUS SERVICES:
There will be an uplifting Saturday evening revival service in one of the Activity Tents conducted by The Reverend Alan Farley (Reenactor’s Mission for Jesus Christ) at 6:15 PM. On Sunday morning at 9:30 Reverend Farley’s Civil War Period service will be conducted in one Activities Tent and a Catholic service in the other Activities Tent. You are welcome to take the reenactor shuttle. Allow ample transport time.
LOST & FOUND :
Please bring any lost & found items to the command center next to the lower hay barn (cavalry registration area) or go to the public address area.
FOOD & BEVERAGE:
There will be a large and diverse variety of food and beverages available during the event. In the CSA Camp, food service will be available exclusively for reenactors 7AM – 11:00PM daily on the parking lot side of the shuttle walking path. On the Federal/Sutler/LH side, there will be extended food service hours at two locations for reenactors. Hours will be 7AM – 11:00PM at the Snack & Beverage Station at the hay barn overhang in the Sutler area near Activities Tent #1 and at the Snack & Beverage Tent near the Federal shuttle terminal on the north side of the Sutler area near the equipment lane. In appreciation to all registered reenactors there will be a $1 discount at these three locations on all food and beverage items - except for breakfast items and $1 snack items. Please note the discount for food and beverages is limited to reenactors at these three locations only that are marked “Snack & Beverage Station.” You must show your Reenactor Pass to receive the discount!
145TH EVENT VIDEO:
The 145TH video Gettysburg: Darkest Days & Finest Hours is being filmed during the event by award winning director and film maker Kevin Hershberger (Wicked Spring). Delivery is scheduled for mid-November in order of reservation. The double disk package includes the movie + special music and candid reenactor footage from the event. Preserve the memories of this event that you made happen. You may reserve and pre-order your copy during the event at registration or at one of the event merchandise booths. You may also order from the home page of this website- www.gettysburgreenactment.com.
SECURITY:
Both the command center and event security will operate 24 hours staffed by professional personnel. Security personnel, EMS staff, reenactor parking staff and gate staff, as well as military command staff, have direct communication with EMS and the command center in the event of an emergency or serious incident.
POST EVENT CAMPING:
Reenactor camping will be allowed on Sunday night following the event until 12 Noon Monday. The site must be vacated by 12 Noon Monday.
By order of J. Jennette, Major-General commanding.
